Davide and ENG have developed a Database portlet that will be
committed soon and that will be part of the next version of
the portal (1.1.x branch)

You first need to configure a DS JNDI then, it allows to
define a succession step of SQL queries that will allow to
show in different pages the result of those queries.

you can use HibernateService so if you prefer Hibernate or,
alternatively, you can bind own DataSource in JNDI using
BindReferencePlugin and then reach it through
InitialContext and use
direct JDBC calls.
