just mind the Naming Service if you are about to use JNDI to access DataSource
(will be the case if you want to use connection pool etc)

It is not necessary to follow a certain procedure for that. Even
though, eXo provides several means to support data access, you can
also natively access a database like you would in any stand-alone web
application.
For instance, you can use JDBC.
Or you can use an OR-mapper such as Torque or Hibernate.
It's up to you. There are cleaner approaches to that but the above
will work, too.
