It is not necessary to follow a certain procedure for that. Even though, eXo provides several means to support data access, you can also natively access a database like you would in any stand-alone web application. For instance, you can use JDBC. Or you can use an OR-mapper such as Torque or Hibernate. It's up to you. There are cleaner approaches to that but the above will work, too.
