Ok. So my remote system is a xen guest, which means it has a virbr0 
network interface, which is bridged for communication between all the 
VMs. RMI was binding to the ip address of that interface. I tried 
setting java.rmi.server.hostname to the ip address of eth0, but it 
appeared this setting wasn't being respected.

That's when you reference to the jonathan.connectionfactory.host 
clicked. Setting _that_ to the ip of eth0 worked like a champ. Thanks 
for the help.
